Steam distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria fragrantissima, Wintergreen has long been valued in topical preparations for tired, overworked muscles and areas of physical tension, making it especially well suited to massage and restorative body-care rituals.
Much of Wintergreen's distinctive character comes from its naturally high methyl salicylate content, a constituent also found in Birch and commonly associated with topical muscle and joint preparations. Its penetrating, cooling sensation makes Wintergreen an appealing choice after physical activity or whenever the body feels overworked. Because this oil contains more than 85% methyl salicylate, however, a little goes a long way and proper dilution and responsible use are especially important.*
